Universal Free School Meals (UFSM)

From September 2014 all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will be entitled to a free school meal. West Sussex County Council is working in partnership with its school meal providers to deliver this exciting new service for pupils.

The majority of primary schools in West Sussex enjoy a hot, nutritious school meal. The meal provides at least two of the suggested five a day portions of fruit and vegetables and meets the Government’s food and nutrient based standards. A school meal consists of a main course, fruit based dessert, fresh milk and bread. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that nutrition and a healthy diet boost children’s performance at school. A child sitting down with their friends to enjoy a hot meal also supports the development of interpersonal skills.

Special dietary requirements can be catered for and please contact the catering provider if your child does require a special diet. Further information regarding your school’s catering contractor and their contact details can be found via the following link.

The information on the contractor’s web-site is intended for information purposes only. Please do not register on the above web site for a meal if your child is in the previously stated year groups.

Parents in receipt of state benefits which give entitlement to free school meals for their children should continue to register with their children’s school. This provides funding to the school not only to fund a free meal but to support eligible pupils with their learning and help towards the cost of school trips, buying educational equipment and with the purchasing of school uniforms.
