Curriculum

Mathematics is a body of knowledge which provides us with a way of thinking and making sense of the world.  It is a powerful means of communication and it allows us to solve problems and to interpret and appreciate the world around us through its language, symbols, visual representation and logic.

At Heene Primary School we encourage pupils to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop their fluency, reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.

In Early Years, mathematics provides children with many opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures. This is done through whole class input, group work and learning through play.

The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study from the National Curriculum at broadly the same pace.  However, decisions about when to progress should always be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage.  Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content.  Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material should consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.

At Heene children are expected to make links with all areas of mathematics and explain their working out using correct mathematical vocabulary.  Children may be asked to explain why an answer is correct or why it is not.

We would like every child to develop a love of maths by feeling secure in those first building blocks, number bonds, addition and subtraction facts and moving on to times table facts.  We ensure children practice their fluency and recall of facts both at home and at school on a regular basis.
