At Heene Primary School, Design and Technology develops the creativity and imagination of our pupils through an engaging and practical curriculum. It enables our pupils to work collaboratively to solve real-life problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ wants, needs and values. DT is taught wherever possible through different subjects and topics and we aim to link it to mathematics, science, computing, engineering and art. Pupils develop their awareness and understanding of the ways in which design has evolved from the past and how it shapes the ideas, products and cultures of the modern world. We teach our pupils to take risks and to learn from failure so that they become resourceful, innovative and enterprising in their approach.
Our pupils learn how the design process works by generating and developing ideas which are modelled and communicated through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design. Within the production process, pupils learn how to select from a wide range of tools and equipment which enable them to perform practical tasks. They learn how to distinguish between materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities. We teach our pupils to take risks and to learn from failure so that they become resourceful, innovative and enterprising in their approach to the planning process. We encourage our pupils to imagine, investigate and analyse the products, structures and components that they create.
