  • Modern Foreign Languages: French

    Subject Leader: Miss A Jameson

    Intent

Heene C of E Primary School strives to be an inclusive community where ‘together in faith, we love, grow and learn’. Our French (MFL) curriculum is the vehicle through which we demonstrate our vision in action through our core values (respect, curiosity, kindness, resilience, hope and confidence).

It is our intent at Heene C of E Primary School to provide all of our children with a high quality education in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), which develops their love of learning about other languages and cultures and helps provide them with respect and understanding of our world.

We aim to build the children’s ‘cultural capital’ so that they have a knowledge and understanding of the richness and diversity between cultures. All pupils at Heene C of E Primary School will be expected to achieve their full potential in their foreign language learning (French).  The ultimate aim is that pupils will feel confident engaging in French, developing skills in reading, listening, speaking and writing and know how important languages will be in their future (learn). Children will understand that the transferable skills developed as they learn French, will support them in their life-long learning (hope). Children will deepen their understanding of the world, learn new ways of thinking and provide the foundation for learning further languages (grow).

We hope that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and curiosity about languages, finding them enjoyable and exciting and show a desire to continue their language learning.

Although our current MFL taught is French, we strive to provide children with opportunities to experience a range of other languages. Together we celebrate all children’s cultural backgrounds and represent these, not only in MFL, but also in our wider curriculum. Children are supported to develop a strong sense of self, empathy and resilience.

Languages are at the centre of Heene C of E Primary School due to so many different languages being spoken by our children. In kindness and trust with one another we promote spiritual development and moral growth alongside our MFL learning (in faith).

    Implementation

French is delivered weekly in key stage two in one hour lessons. Teachers are supported with the Language Angels scheme to deliver effective and high quality language teaching.

    Impact

For French to equip pupils with practical language skills that build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. It nurtures curiosity about other cultures and develops transferable communication strategies that support future language learning and global engagement.
