    Intent

Heene C of E Primary School strives to be an inclusive community where ‘together in faith, we love, grow and learn’. Our Design Technology curriculum is the vehicle through which we demonstrate our vision in action through our core values (respect, curiosity, kindness, resilience, hope and confidence).

We provide all of our children with a high quality Design Technology curriculum, which enables them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real life purpose. Through practical exploration they develop a love of learning and provides the opportunity to solve problems using their imagination confidently.  Children will design and create within a variety of contexts considering the needs, wants and values of themselves and others around them (together). We hope that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and curiosity about design and technology.

During DT lessons pupils should draw upon their knowledge from the wider curriculum for example; science, art and computing (learn). The evaluation process allows pupils to become self-reflective (grow) and consider how high quality design and technology projects can contribute to society and culture (hope). Through kind, respectful and constructive reflection and refinement children are supported to develop resilience and trust in their creativity, ideas and those of others (in faith).

    Implementation

Design and Technology is implemented across the school using key strands such as food, textiles, structures and mechanisms to develop children’s understanding of design, creation and development. DT is implemented in a way in which to gauge the children’s interest in design briefs for given purposes. This allows children to develop their understanding and design products for particular reasons or uses. As the children move through the school children develop skills that are building on prior learning, understanding and application of skills taught previously. By implementing and basing DT lessons around topics from across the curriculum, this enables our children to gain the key knowledge and acquire the prerequisite skills for designing or making.

    Impact

The impact of the DT curriculum is that children will leave our school with an awareness of how to design, make and evaluate the process, creation and product. This will enable children to become confident designers as they progress onto the next stages of their education. Children’s resilience in working technologically with a range of resources. The impact is ascertained through pupil voice, the children’s product creation and their evaluation or comments made afterwards.
