Intent
Heene CE Primary School strives to be an inclusive community where ‘together in faith, we love, grow and learn’. Our science curriculum is the vehicle through which we demonstrate our vision in action through our core values (respect, curiosity, kindness, resilience, hope, confidence).
The Bible says ‘And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good.’ (Genesis 1:31). As a Christian community, we take on this responsibility to ensure that we all respect the Lord’s creation and make these links with the Science curriculum.
We respect each child as an individual scientist with a unique potential for learning. We foster collaboration through regularly completing practical enquiries in pairs and groups and engage children within their community, particularly through work on the natural world (together). We encourage children’s natural curiosity through relating their learning to relevant, real-life examples. Deepening their scientific understanding of the world also helps them to grow in love and appreciation for the Earth and everything upon it.
Our science learning is founded upon age-appropriate rigorous discussions of scientific ideas, where children use evidence to explain their reasoning. Children are explicitly taught the appropriate vocabulary needed to address each topic (learn). They demonstrate kindness as they discuss their ideas, promoting spiritual development and moral growth learning (in faith).
Children learn the skills to “work scientifically”, guided by their teachers until these can be used independently (grow). Pupils develop resilience as they apply these skills to answer enquiry questions.
Our science curriculum brings hope to children, equipping them with the skills to engage with global issues and to make valuable contributions to the wider community, both now and as they get older. Children are introduced to a diverse range of real-life scientists and careers, raising their confidence in their own futures. Their “science capital” is grown both within and outside of lessons, including through trips, books and workshops. We aim to give all children the opportunities to see themselves as scientists.
