Intent

As an inclusive community, we live out our vision: “Together in faith, we love, grow and learn.”

Our English curriculum is a key vehicle for demonstrating this vision in action, underpinned by our core values of respect, curiosity, kindness, resilience, hope, and confidence. Through a rich and interconnected approach to English, we recognise its central role in enabling learning across all subjects.

We nurture a belief that every child leaves Heene CE Primary School as a confident speaker, reader, and writer, fully prepared for the next stage of their education, providing targeted interventions to ensure no one is left behind. We promote a love of literacy through exposure to a wide range of high-quality texts, including literature from diverse times and cultures, non-fiction, media texts, and digital communications. Reflecting the rich cultural and social heritage of our pupils, ensuring representation and relevance, these texts inspire curiosity about the world and foster respect for others.

We encourage children to be curious about language, develop a broad vocabulary, and understand how authors use grammatical devices for effect—skills they apply in their own writing. Through discussion and reflection, pupils explore key ideas and issues, promoting spiritual development and moral growth in faith.

Our curriculum empowers children with the confidence and ability to express themselves through spoken and written word. They are inspired to write in a variety of styles and forms, becoming resilient learners who apply a range of strategies in speaking, reading, and writing. Staff model a passion for reading and research, fostering enthusiasm and a lifelong love of literacy.
