Mathematics Curriculum Statement

Mathematics is a core subject of the National Curriculum and skills are taught and practised daily in each year group.  All maths lessons are planned for in year group teams taking prior learning and end of year learning objectives into account. 

  • In Early Years, mathematics provides children with many opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures. This is done through whole class input, group work and learning through play. 
  • Children in Key Stage 1 continue their mathematical learning to develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value.  They learn to sort, compare and name shapes using the correct mathematical language.  We teach children to explain their mathematical thinking and begin to record this using informal methods.  
  • Children are taught basic skills with a variety of teaching styles to ensure that lessons are engaging and, as much as possible, are based on real life situations.  Children in Year 2 are taught 1 lesson a week in targeted groups where the year group is split into ability groups.

  • Lower Key Stage 2 encourages children to become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and all four operations.  Children will be able to solve problems using a variety of suitable strategies.  Children continue to learn their times tables to be fully confident up to 12 x 12 by the end of year 4. In Year 3 children are taught part of the week in class groups and part of the week in targeted groups.

 

Mathematics skills are also developed through other curriculum areas where it is possible.
