Assessment Principles - January 2016
Our assessment system sets out what pupils are expected to know, understand and do and by when and is very closely linked to our curriculum delivery.
The Department for Education (2014) states that the purpose of assessment is to ensure pupils, teachers and parents know if pupils are achieving the expected standard or if they need to catch up.
They believe that effective assessment systems:
Give reliable information to parents about how their child, and their child’s school, is performing
o Allow meaningful tracking of pupils towards end of key stage expectations in the new
curriculum, including regular feedback to parents.
o Provide information which is transferable and easily understood and covers both qualitative
and quantitative assessment.
o Differentiate attainment between pupils of different abilities, giving early recognition of pupils who are falling behind and those who are excelling.
o Are reliable and free from bias.
Help drive improvement for pupils and teachers
o Are closely linked to the quality of teaching.
o Ensure feedback to pupils contributes to improved learning and is focused on specific and tangible objectives.
o Produce recordable measures which can demonstrate comparison against expected standards
and reflect progress over time.
Make sure the school is keeping up with external best practice and innovation
o Are created in consultation with those delivering best practice locally.
o Are created in consideration of, and are benchmarked against, international best practice.
At Heene we aim to improve pupils’ learning through assessment by:
o Actively involving pupils in their own learning
o Adapting teaching taking account of assessment information
o Providing written and spoken constructive feedback to pupils.
We assess pupils day to day by:
Observing learning; questioning children; setting tasks; monitoring written work; moderating across year groups and with local schools; pupil progress meetings and formal testing.
The current Year 2 children will be assessed at the end of Key Stage 1 using new National Curriculum Tests and outcomes will be linked to age-related expectations and scaled scores in maths, reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling, writing and expected standards in science.
